How to choose your handkerchief or pocket square
Selecting a pocket square to finish your outfit is a great idea. It's a way of showing you care; elevating your outfit to the next level (especially for special events like the races or your wedding); and is a way of expressing your personality.
Here at Peggy & Finn, we love a matching set - which is why our pocket squares can be found in all our popular ranges including the Eucalyptus, Banksia, Waratah, Protea, Native Floral Range and more.
So if you're choosing from these ranges, the choice is easy! Just select the matching pocket square for your range.
If you want to make it a little less matchy-matchy, we recommend selecting a complimentary colour to your neck-tie or bow tie; and one that is already in the design. For all our ranges above, we've also included some plain-coloured pocket squares if you didn't want the same pattern in your suit.
Still completely stylish and perfectly coordinated!
Winning!
How to fold your pocket square
Pocket Squares are designed to go in the front pocket of your jacket, with about 2-3cm visible above the pocket.
The size you fold it to will depend on both the size of the pocket square (ours are 32cm x 32cm); and the size of your pocket.
It's important not to push it in randomly, as this can causes bulges and will ruin your look.
Here's some traditional methods of how to fold your pocket square to create that winning look:
How to fold your pocket square #1 - The Presidential fold - otherwise known as the Architect fold; the Straight, or 'TV' fold.
This is an understated, minimalist way to fold your pocket square. Depending on the look you're trying to create, this usually sticks out about 0.5cm - 2.5cm from your pocket.
Start with the pocket square, pattern side down, and fold in half in a rectangle. Then fold the bottom up to the top; but not all the way. Leave approximately 1.5cm (or desired height) not folded at the top.
Then fold into three - depending on the width of your jacket pocket; and fold in half again.
Put in your jacket pocket either fold side up, or fold side down; depending on what look you are after.
How to fold your pocket square #2 - The One-Point Fold method
Fold your pocket square in half in a triangle.
Then fold the right side in, followed by the left side; so that there is a twisted square left at the top of the pocket square.
Try to match the width of what you are creating, to the width of your pocket.
Then fold the bottom upwards, leaving the pointed end clear; as this will be what appears above your pocket line of your suit.
How to fold your pocket square #3 - The Two-Point Fold method
Start with the pocket square pattern-side down, and turn it so the corners are facing left and right.
You then need to fold the bottom corner, to just left of the top corner, as this will form your double point on your final folded handkerchief.
As in the one-point fold, you then need to fold the right side over the left; and the left over the right. Adjust until you have this the right width for your pocket.
Fold in any 'left over' parts of the pocket square (which will be hidden by your pocket, don't worry!).
Then fold the bottom up to the top; leaving the double-point clear of your fold.
Done! Ready to party :-)
How to fold your pocket square #4 - The Three-Point Fold method
Now you're getting snazzy!
As with the two-point fold; start with your pocket square pattern side down; and with the corners of the square facing left and right. Fold the bottom corner to just left of the top corner.
Then fold the far left corner, to the right hand side of the top point. This forms your third point in your pocket square when it's completed.
Fold the right side over the left, and then the left side in; again anticipating the width of your pocket so it fits in nicely.
Then fold in any excess pieces, and fold the bottom up to the top so this fits flat in your pocket; with the 3 points showing.
Whala! You're a pro.
How to fold your pocket square #5 - Puff method
Start with your square pattern side up.
Find the exact centre of your square. Making a circle with your fingers, pull the centre of the square through your fingers, so it forms a 'puff' at the top; and stopping about half-way up.
Gather the bottom; and fold it back upwards towards the top. The extra pieces will be hidden inside your pocket.
How to fold your pocket square #6 - The Winged Puff method
Sorry to disappoint, but this is not a new sort of pokemon - it's one of the most stylish and popular ways to fold your pocket square!
Start with the pocket square pattern-side down, and fold in half to form a rectangle.
Then fold in half again, to form a square (*this works assuming your original pocket square is, actually square).
Then turn the pocket square so the corners are facing up and down (or left and right).
Fold in half in to form a triangle; top to bottom.
The fold the sides inwards to form a square; so that the square is made up of two triangles; one from the left hand side; and one from the right hand side.
Simples!
Finally, fold the edges in so the pocket square fits in your pocket.
Style personified. Yes!
Pocket Square Rules - what to do (and not to do!) with your pocket square.
There's a few things you need to keep in mind with your pocket square.
After all, you've gone to all this effort to look the part - so you kinda need to follow through on it.
Rule # 1 for pocket squares - One thing only
Pocket squares are for one thing - to make your suit stand out and for you to look like a million dollars.
They are not for saving damsals in distress who need a handkerchief; for blowing your nose on; or for wiping that extra gravy off the side of your mouth.
Make sure you have a spare handkerchief or some tissues for such an occassion stashed away neatly in your pocket.
Rule #2 for pocket squares - co-ordinate!
Make sure your pocket square is not a statement on its own; but ties in with the rest of your outfit.
It should match your shirt & tie; but not over-power or clash with it.
If you select the pocket square from one of our ranges; you can be sure this is not a problem for you.
Rule # 3 for pocket squares - correct folding
Make sure your pocket square is folded properly.
Follow one of the traditional ways of folding it; and iron it to keep its shape before placing it in your pocket if you have to.
The last thing you want is a bulgy pocket because you've not carefully folded your pocket square. Not a good look!
Rule # 4 for pocket squares - nothing in your pocket!
This may sound kind of silly; but we've seen it go wrong.
If you're wearing a pocket square - don't put anything else in your suit pocket!
As with Rule 3, you want to look slick and stylish - which means NO BULGES! :-).
And you certainly don't want to ruin your pocket square by getting fountain pen ink all over it (rolling of the eyes).
You get the drift.
